Retinal treatment

лечение сетчатки глаза

Retinal treatment allows getting rid of the major visual impairment and most cases of blindness caused by retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and macular diseases. If part of the retina is damaged, there is a high probability that the vision will be lost to some extent.

Retinal cells do not regenerate, so vision is irreversibly lost. The only correct strategy for preventing vision loss due to retinal diseases is a regular diagnosis and timely measures.

Diagnosis of retinal diseases

One cannot diagnose retinal diseases alone and thus prevent the occurrence and progression of serious pathologies. At Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic, the retina is evaluated with the modern diagnostic equipment as follows:

  • Examination of the visual fields (perimetry) to evaluate the retina at its periphery;
  • Ultrasound examination of the eye’s internal structures;
  • Eye ground examination (ophthalmoscopy) to evaluate the retina, optic nerve disc, and eye ground vessels;
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retina to assess its macular (central) zone.

Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic applies modern and effective methods of laser, medication, and conservative (injection) treatment of various retinal diseases such as retinal dystrophy, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular edema. When choosing a treatment option, many factors are considered: the disease itself, its nature and stage, the age of the patient, concomitant conditions.

Methods of retinal treatment

Laser photocoagulation of the retina

Laser photocoagulation of the retina is applied in the case of peripheral and central dystrophies of the retina, vascular lesions, certain types of tumors, as well as to stop the progression in case of diabetic retinopathy and macular edema.

At Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic, laser coagulation is performed using a special high-precision diode laser. The principle of laser photocoagulation treatment is based on the fact that the heat causes coagulation (clotting) of the tissue and adhesions. It is performed contactless and painless, under local droplet anesthesia, and does not require hospitalization. Laser photocoagulation of the retina is especially effective at an early stage.

Treatment outcome

Eliminating dystrophic foci and the risk of sudden retinal detachment.

Peripheral prophylactic retinal photocoagulation

Peripheral prophylactic retinal photocoagulation (PPRP) is effective in preventing the progression of eye ground changes in retinal dystrophies. Such conditions can lead to retinal detachment, which dramatically reduces vision. The PPRP procedure is usually recommended to myopic patients with stretched retina due to enlarged eyeballs and dystrophic foci, as well as to pregnant women with retinal detachment risk during the delivery. The procedure also improves the blood supply to the retina, enhances the nutrition of the affected area of the retina, prevents the fluid penetration under the retina and, consequently, its detachment.

Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic offers peripheral prophylactic laser photocoagulation to strengthen the retina. Peripheral prophylactic retinal photocoagulation is absolutely safe, including for pregnant women and their future children, takes only a few minutes, and is performed under local anesthesia on the same day.

Treatment outcome

The procedure itself has no effect on the visual acuity. However, if your doctor recommends peripheral prophylactic retinal photocoagulation, you should by no means refuse it. The procedure stops the progression of dystrophic changes in the retina, protecting it from stretching and detaching, and thus from vision loss.

Retinal treatment with injections

Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic offers intravitreal (intraocular) injections with special medications to treat diseases of the macula, the central zone of the retina responsible for central vision (age-related macular degeneration, macular edema). The unique properties of these medications allow not only to slow the progressive deterioration of vision but in some cases even to restore visual acuity.

Intraocular injections at Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic are performed in compliance with all world standards and do not require hospitalization. The course of procedures is prescribed by a doctor, the treatment outcomes are monitored by unique diagnostic equipment – RTVue-100 optical coherence tomography scanner (USA).

Treatment outcome

Slowing down and stopping degenerative processes leads to visual impairment and loss. In some cases, when treating retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy, injecting drugs not only stops degenerative processes but also improves visual acuity.

Medical treatment of retinal diseases

Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic takes a comprehensive approach to treating retinal diseases, and that is why additional medications may be a part of the treatment. The medications and their dosage are chosen by the doctor individually.

Treatment outcome

Improving blood supply to the retina and optic nerve, nourishing the retina, and resolving hemorrhages.

Surgical treatment of retinal diseases

Surgical treatment (vitrectomy) is indicated for massive intraocular hemorrhages or advanced diabetic retinopathy. Vitrectomy is aimed at removing blood clots, opaque areas of the vitreous body (or the whole vitreous body if necessary), and the fibrovascular bands on the retinal surface. Treatment is attenuated, without hospitalization.

To detect the disease onset, simply measuring the intraocular pressure is not enough. The eye ground and optic disc must be examined in detail, and the visual field must be examined. For this purpose, the diagnostics must be performed with a whole set of equipment.

Dynamic monitoring

During retinal treatment, undergoing regular examinations by an ophthalmologist and having a complete examination of the visual system at least once a year is vital. At Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic, patient data is stored in an electronic database, allowing you to monitor the dynamics. The eye exam includes a detailed study of the retina and optic nerve, and the central area of the retina (macula) is monitored using the RTVue-100 optical coherence tomography scanner, which provides the highest accuracy of assessing the eye ground structures.

Benefits of retinal treatment at Eximer Ophthalmology Clinic

  1. The clinics apply state-of-the-art methods, including innovative ones, for conservative, therapeutic, and laser treatment of retinal disorders.
  2. The treatment program is drawn up individually after a thorough diagnostic examination of the eye ground structures using cutting-edge equipment.
  3. Laser therapies to preserve vision are highly attenuated and performed in a single day.
  4. The clinics offer innovative intraocular injections for treating the central zone of the retina (macula).
  5. Observation and treatment are provided by qualified retinologists with extensive experience.

Brand new diagnostic devices, in particular, the unique RTVue-100 (USA) optical coherence tomography scanner, provide physicians with an opportunity to observe the visual system in dynamics and monitor the treatment outcomes.
